[Closed] Mere trivialties

First topic message reminder :
deGray surveyed the fresh pick of students. He could not understand what his assistant was thinking. These fifteen year old boys were scrawny and lanky, not sturdy and large like a battleschool boy should be. Sighing, he nodded to his assistant. I just hope they bulk up.. He walked back to his office, wishing he were back out on the plateau and not hidden inside a castle. The day to day life of being the Battleschool master was trivial at best. Size up some recruits then go to the office and pretend to look at paperwork. The new recruits won't arrive for another six months.. I hope I can survive this place that much longer. deGray had been serving as Battleschool master ever since Lord Alister had saved his life after he had fallen from his horse.
deGray sighed yet again. I need an apprentice before I get any older, and none of those twigs out there look like they could even take a hit. After taking a swig of water from his large mug, he walked back outside and looked at the second year recruits. They would be graduating this year, yet none of them impressed him. He wanted to see some natural talent, not forced movements and faltering concentration. deGray inhaled the outside air, loving the smell that came from the kitchen. Perhaps the problem is the kitchen... The kitchens were right next to the battleschool, and practically anyone could scale the small stone wall that surrounded the school. If the students were sneaking food, it would explain the lumbering grace that nearly every single one of the second years exhibited. Maybe a change of scenery would liven things up. deGray silently prayed for his request to be granted as he walked towards Lord Alister's tower.

deGray dismounted a few meters from the treeline. He waited as Muradin caught up and dismounted, then turned towards the trees.
"I know who sent those henchmen.. Did you see the crater when we passed? Strange place isn't it? I think a tribe of centaur came through here.. See the prints?" He pointed his large finger at a scuffed line in the dirt nearby. "I'm no tracker but I think they were moving pretty fast. I know the falling grounds is near here and that they run on the way there, but these tracks indicate sprinting." Rowan quickly moved his horse forward and tied it to a tree. "Shall we go see if we can't find those falling grounds?"

Muradin tied his horse to tree and followed deGray into the forest.
"So where exactly are these Falling Grounds?" Muradin asked.

"I'm not exactly sure.. but the tribe was large enough that they should have left some sort of trail." deGray began to move around, searching for a trail.

Muradin bent down to look for any signs that anything moved through here. Then Muradin saw that there were broken twigs and sticks that that broke in two places as if something stepped on it and there were multiple.
"Hey is this what were looking for?" Muradin pointed to the trail of broken twigs.

Rowan jogged over and looked at what Muradin had found. This is the trail..
"Good eye!" deGray slapped the axeman on the back and began slowly following the trail through the woods. Eventually a low ringing sound began to engulf the two travelers. deGray rubbed at his ears but he knew the it wouldn't stop. Annoying as it was, he wasn't sure if the ringing had any affect, so he didn't bother mentioning it to Muradin.

Muradin's brow furrowed and he rubbed his head. The ringing was getting annoying.
"Hey what's that ringing sound?" He asked irritated by the ringing.

"Its the forest." deGray paused to find the trail again then kept moving. "Nobody knows why it does that, but it's damn annoying."
Eventually the party of two came to a large wall of tightly woven foliage. Definitely made by the centaurs. Rowan followed the wall horizontally until he realized it was in the form of an off shaped oval.
"We need to get inside." deGray said and he pulled out his shortsword.

deGray nodded and began slashing at the thick wall of dried foliage. It was hard work, and before he had even made a dent in the wall the Battlemaster was beginning to feel sweat on his brow. He turned to check the progress Muradin was making.

Muradin chuckled and then heaved his axe for a mighty blow, crunch! His blade sunk into the wall then broke though, only a slight hole. He kept hacking until he had made a hole big enough for him and deGray to slip through.

deGray sighed in frustration. There was no ravine in the center, which meant this whole set-up was just that; a set-up.
"Well, now somebody knows we are here." deGray said with a frown. "Lets keep looking for the real falling grounds." He muttered quieter, without moving his lips.
deGray climbed back through and helped Muradin through so that he didn't fall. He crouched down and began looking for real centaur tracks.

deGray sighed in relief when he spotted what he was sure were Centaur tracks.
"Got 'em." He motioned to Muradin and began following the tracks.
The Battlemaster did not however, anticipate where the tracks would lead him. After a single hour of walking the party of two came upon a gruesome sight. A Cent lay in the weeds, gasping for air. He had an arrow through one of his lungs, but deGray could already tell he had a fair chance of living if he fought.
"What is your name, friend?" deGray spoke fluently in the rough trading language that was known and used widely around Redmont Plateau.
"D-," The Centaur called out in pain when Rowan broke off the arrow, "Darius."
"Alright Darius. Stand, and lets get you to our camp." deGray silently hoped that Muradin wouldnt ask something like what camp?

Muradin grumbled and started to want some ale. He grabbed his small bag and unrolled his bedroll. Muradin squinted into the night, I thought I heard something. He scanned the area squinting in the darkness.

deGray helped Darius onto a soft bit of grass then moved to begin making a fire. He noticed that Muradin was acting strange and staring wildly into the darkness around the camp.
"Muradin?" deGray poked the stout axeman.

Muradin literally leapt into the air from the startling poke. He landed sideways and hit his head, Muradin rubbed his head vigorously.
"Don't scare me like that!" Muradin climbed to his feet rubbing his chest. "I though i heard something."
